Research and Planning

This is my reader profile i made when deciding the target market for my magazine. For this i had to determine then analyse my ideal target reader then focus on making a 'day in the life of...', which i what i have made here.

This is is the page where i planned my DPS and main article. I listed the ideas i had for my article, how to present it and also ideas for my puff and other issues relating to my DPS.

This is the page where I analysed the front covers of my rival magazines. I did this so i could deconstruct them and see why they were successful and if the layout is good or too cluttered. I then used this information for when i created my own font cover to see what codes and conventions i can use for my own magazine.

original imagery used throughout my project

This first image has been cut out and edited using photoshop to make out that my musician had won a Brit Award, which was then used in context to my interview on my DPS. This image was used to make a second front cover, which was then used at the bottom of the contents page in a subscription to 'Chilled' box.
This photo was a re-creation of a photo of Dashboard Confessional lead singer Chris Carrabba, i used this on my contents page to highlight another article and interview, which would be later on in my magazine. One point with this image i had to edit was the fact that at the time this photo was taken, the model had a sandwich in his hand and this is something neither of us picked up on properly at the time we were taking the photo so i had to edit this photo and remove the sandwich using Photoshop.

This is one of the photos I used for my DPS, I cut this out using Photoshop and inserted it onto my DPS.

This is the other image i used for my DPS, just like the other image i had to use the editing software to cut it out then insert it onto my DPS.

This is the photo I used for my front cover, it was taken in black and white and originally this was going to be an issue however I decided to edit this photo and highlight key colours then i used this alongside with my content of my DPS.

Pre-Lim Task

This is my pre-lim task front cover. The task was to create a front cover for a school magazine aimed at younger students.

As you can see from this cover, my abilities to work with adobe photoshop elements 6.0 have increased a lot. I personally think that this cover isn't very good at all and looks far too amateur as the photo has been poorly cut out as well as the colours being too bold and simple.

However i think i managed to make a good piece of work baring in mind my basic skills on photoshop. I like the way i laid out the page as i chose to have listings at the top and at the side. This is similar to the style of Kerrang! and I think this is the best point of this piece of work.

Also another point I picked up on with this piece of work is the title. I noticed that it was very un-original and also the font in, which it was written isn't very effective for a front cover and doesn't look very good at all, so when i was making my real cover i kept this in mind to focus on the title and make sure it is original and to a good standard.

This is my DPS. It is an interview with my fictional musician 'James Longley.' It is an interview conducted after he won a Brit Award for 'Best Male Solo Artist.' I studied numerous magazines when finding inspiration for my DPS and decided that this was the best and most successful way to lay out the page.

When writing the article i chose to have an introduction to the artist, which is then followed by a series of questions and answers.

I also added in numerous photos including an edited photo of my musician celebrating winning a Brit Award.

This is the Contents Page for my music magazine 'CHILLED.' Just like the front cover I wished to have my contents page clear and uncluttered. I made my contents page clearly laid out with my mast-head at the top. Also at the side I took an original photo re-creation of an image of Chris Carrabba from Dashboard Confessional, a band , which are a perfect example/inspiration for the genre of music my magazine would promote.

I wanted to use more sorter 'warmer' colours for my magazine and I have used a lot of these on my contents, this gives off a warmer and more inviting feeling for the magazine.

This is the front cover for my music magazine project. As you can see by the mast-head it is called Chilled. I think it is a very big improvement from my pre-lim task. I have learnt alot more about how to use the technology of Adobe Photoshop Elements 6.0. I used these skills to my advantage and edited my front cover photo so i highlight main colours on the black and white photo making certain parts stand out to the reader.

My aim was to make it stand out yet also be quite basic and not to cluttered with information so the focus is on the front cover image. I believe i have accomplished this with my front cover as using originally imagery in black and white with my skills on photoshop i was able to be much more creative and figure out how best to appeal to my target audience.

Chilled - Target Audience

Hello,

My name is James Longley and my music magazine is called 'Chilled.' It is a magazine, which focusses on softer music like soft jazz and acoustic music. The target market for my magazine is both male and females but dominantly female and they are aged 16 - 25.
